Retirement Age Hike: Tata Group’s airline Air India is increasing the retirement age for its pilots to 65 years. At the same time, it has decided to increase the retirement age to 60 years for other employees i.e. non-flying staff. This information was given in a report by news agency PTI quoting sources. Currently, the retirement age for both pilots and other employees in Air India is 58 years. Sources said that the announcement of increasing the retirement age was made by CEO and MD Campbell Wilson in the airline’s town hall.
Air India has a staff of about 24,000 employees. These include about 3600 pilots and about 9500 cabin crew members. According to PTI, it is not yet known whether the retirement age has been increased for the cabin crew of Air India or not. Their retirement age is currently 58 years.
Retirement age became an issue during the merger of Vistara
Vistara, the Tata Group airline merged with Air India, had a retirement age of 65 years for pilots and 60 years for non-flying staff. Vistara was a joint venture between Tata and Singapore Airlines. Vistara was merged with Air India in November 2024. During the integration, there was discontent among a section of Air India pilots that the retirement age was different for them and their counterparts at Vistara.
In recent times, some pilots and cabin crew members have left Air India. According to the report, sources say that the retirement age of Air India pilots is currently 58 years. But for most pilots, it has been increased to 65 years. This age is also the maximum limit approved for commercial pilots by aviation regulator DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation).
