Warsaw: It seems like the Russia-Ukraine war is not going to end soon as things are escalating every day. In a recent development, Poland on Wednesday claimed that its army has shot down Russian drones that barged into its airspace. This unprecedented move has ignited fresh tensions in the region. According to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, confirming the use of weapons against Russian drones, he said the military action was required and was in reaction to several violations of the country’s airspace. He further informed that NATO, of which Poland is a member, had been informed about the action. The Polish army informed that the country’s fighter jets and NATO military aircraft had been deployed to maintain airspace safety.
It is the first time that Polish and NATO forces jointly jumped into the conflict. Meanwhile, Ukraine asserted that Moscow is testing the West.
Will The Military Action Further Escalate Tension In The Region?
It is noteworthy that Poland’s claim of shooting down Russian drones is not a good news as the European country is a NATO member and as per NATO’s Article-5, if any member country is attacked then all NATO countries will attack the country. Meanwhile, Poland has requested its citizens to stay at home. Earlier, Ukrainian Air Force posted on Telegram that Russian drones are moving westwards and can attack Zamosc – a city in Poland.
How Many Russian Drones Entered Poland?
It is not clear how many killer Russian drones barged into Poland’s airspace and how many have been destroyed by the Polish jets. According to Polish officials, airspace above Chopin Airport and Modlin Airport in Warsaw has also been closed due to “unplanned military activity”.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian media claimed that a Russian drones was heading towards Rzeszow, which is located near Ukraine’s western border.
Will NATO Protect Poland?
Poland is a member of NATO and it is eligible of getting protection from it, if attacked by a non-NATO country. However, the recent Polish military action as further deepened the fear of the spread of the Russia-Ukraine war in Europe.
According to Polish media, four airports – including capital Warsaw’s largest Chopin Airport, were completely closed due to “unplanned military activities”.
