DGCA imposes heavy fine on IndiGo, know the whole matter

DGCS Slaps IndiGo Fine: The investigation revealed that the training on full flight simulator (FFS) of around 1,700 pilots, including pilot-in-command and first officers, was not certified for high-risk airports – such as Calicut, Leh and Kathmandu.

IndiGo fined 20 lakh rupees: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has fined IndiGo, the country’s largest airline, 20 lakh rupees for alleged deficiencies in pilot training. The company said it is considering challenging the order before the appellate authority.

The DGCA’s action comes after an investigation into IndiGo’s training records revealed serious deficiencies. The investigation revealed that the training on the full flight simulator (FFS) of approximately 1,700 pilots, including pilots-in-command and first officers, was not certified for high-risk airports—such as Calicut, Leh, and Kathmandu.

What is the whole matter?

These airports are classified as “high-risk” because of the challenging weather, runway conditions, and geographical conditions. Consequently, the DGCA has fined IndiGo ₹2 million and ordered the company to improve its training procedures.

IndiGo said in a stock exchange filing on Wednesday that it received a notice from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) regarding the penalty on September 26. According to the regulator, the penalty was imposed for alleged failure to use appropriate simulators for pilot training at Category C airports.

Category “C” airports are locations where access and operating conditions are challenging. The DGCA said IndiGo failed to comply with the training standards set for these airports.

Action has already been taken

The company stated that internal communication delays led to a delay in releasing this information publicly. However, the airline clarified that the order will not impact its financial position, operations, or other activities. IndiGo stated that it is committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety in operating its aircraft.

This isn’t the first time the DGCA has fined IndiGo. In 2023, the regulator also imposed a fine of ₹3 million on the airline. At that time, a special audit found numerous deficiencies in the company’s operations, training, and engineering departments.
