Crackdown on drunk driving during festive season launched

In a decisive move to curb drunk driving during the festive season, the Himachal Pradesh Police have launched an intensive state-wide campaign aimed at ensuring safer roads. The initiative focuses on strict enforcement and heightened public awareness regarding the perils of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Under the new directive, all Superintendents of Police (SPs) have been instructed to establish checkpoints on highways, in busy city areas and near major markets. These checkpoints will operate from 6 pm to 6 am, equipped with alco-sensors and other modern devices to test suspected drivers for alcohol consumption.

Anyone caught driving after consuming alcohol will face a fine of up to Rs 10,000, six months imprisonment or both. The police have also been authorised to register cases against offenders who misbehave or obstruct duty during checks, following a medical examination.

Officials revealed that the state has witnessed a sharp increase in road accidents during the festive season, largely due to drunk driving. This campaign is designed not only as a law enforcement measure but also as a public safety and awareness drive.

Emphasising personal responsibility, the police have urged citizens to avoid drinking and driving, reminding them that recklessness endangers not only their own lives but also those of passengers and pedestrians.
