H-1B Visa Rules: After increasing the H-1B visa fee to $100,000, the Donald Trump administration is now preparing to take further steps. The increase in fees means that an Indian seeking an H-1B visa for employment in the US will have to pay Rs 80 lakh. The majority of people availing this visa are from countries like India and China. It is said that around 70% of those who have been availing this visa are Indians. In such a situation, Indians will be the ones facing the biggest setback. Meanwhile, there is news that the Donald Trump administration may impose some more restrictions.
Under this, some additional rules can also be made regarding who can avail the benefit of H-1B visa and how companies can use this permit. It will also be decided who can be eligible under H-1B visa. Changes in H-1B visa rules have been proposed by the US Department of Homeland Security. Currently, H-1B is a temporary visa category. Under this, non-American people get the opportunity to enter. Especially people of Indian origin have been benefiting from it on a large scale.
The H-1B visa category was introduced under the Immigration Act of 1990. It allowed American companies to hire foreigners with the necessary technical skills. This rule allowed Indians to migrate to the United States on a large scale, particularly given the significant number of Indians in American tech companies. Until now, the limit was limited to 65,000 H-1B visas per year. Additionally, 20,000 were exempted for individuals with a master’s degree from an American university. Several universities and non-profit organizations are also exempt.
According to a report by the Pew Research Center, three-quarters of those expected to travel to the United States under H-1B visas in 2023 were Indians. Since 2012, 60% of those granted H-1B visas have gone into computer-related jobs. H-1B visas have also been issued for the healthcare sector, banks, universities, and other institutions.
