Nobel Peace Prize winners announced, Trump misses out, Maria Corina Machado gets the peace award

Nobel Peace Prize: The Nobel Peace Prize was announced on Friday at around 2.30 pm (local time). This year’s award created a massive buzz as United States President Donald Trump had positioned himself as a candidate for the prestigious award for “ending wars” across the globe. However, he missed out this time and Maria Corina Machado clinched the peace award.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee decided to award this year’s prestigious award to Maria Corina Machado. According to the committee her tireless work “promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”

Notably, the Maria’s name was announced in Oslo, marking a pinnacle of Nobel Week. The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The committee received a total of 338 nominations this year, including 244 individuals and 94 organisations.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee decided to focus on Venezuela this time amid Donald Trump’s repeated public statements that he deserves the peace prize for ending multiple wars.

The official announcement of the Nobel Peace Award was made by Jorgen Watne Frydnes at the Norwegian Nobel Institute. Frydnes is serving as chair of the five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee,

It is to be noted that The Norwegian Nobel Committee has a total of five members – foreign policy scholar Asle Toje, former Minister of Education Kristin Clemet, human rights advocate Jorgen Watne Frydnes, Ex-acting PM Anne Enger, and former Secretary of Foreign Affairs Gry Larsen.
