JAMMU, Oct 10: Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu has performed its 100th microvascular free flap surgery – a complex limb salvage operation on a patient suffering from leg sarcoma (cancer).
The intricate procedure involved meticulous removal of the cancerous tumour followed by reconstruction using a microvascular free flap taken from the patient’s chest.
The eight to ten-hour-long surgery was performed by a multidisciplinary team led by Dr Bias Dev, Associate Professor, Department of Orthopaedics, along with Dr Sanjay Dhar, Consultant and Dr Devika Rakesh, Assistant Professor, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. The anaesthesia team was headed by Dr Madan Katoch, Professor, Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, while tumour clearance was ensured through frozen section analysis conducted under Prof Jyotsana, Head, Department of Pathology. The patient has recovered well and is under regular follow-up.
Highlighting the achievement, Dr Sanjay Dhar said that GMC Jammu has successfully performed over 250 major reconstructions for head, neck, and limb cancers in the past decade, including 100 microvascular free flaps. “These are high-end surgeries requiring long hours, precision, and teamwork across multiple specialties,” he said.
The Department of Surgery, under Prof Ratnakar Sharma, himself a plastic surgeon, has played a pivotal role in advancing reconstructive surgical care in collaboration with departments of ENT, Orthopaedics, and Oncology.
GMC Jammu’s reconstructive services extend beyond cancer surgeries to include trauma reconstruction, burn contracture release, congenital deformity correction, breast reconstruction, and peripheral nerve repair.
Prof Ratnakar Sharma stressed the importance of timely reconstructive surgeries in improving outcomes for cancer survivors, while Prof Ashutosh Gupta, Principal, GMC Jammu, noted that all reconstructive procedures are provided under the Ayushman Bharat-PMJAY scheme, ensuring affordable access to advanced surgical care for patients across Jammu and Kashmir.
