IndiGo, the country’s largest airline, announced that it would begin direct flights from Delhi to Guangzhou, following the recent thaw in relations between the two countries. There had been no direct flights between China and India since 2020.
New Delhi: India’s largest airline, IndiGo, is resuming daily direct flights from Delhi to Guangzhou, China, starting November 10th. Previously, the airline had announced plans to resume daily flights between Kolkata and Guangzhou from October 26, 2025. Following recent diplomatic talks between the two countries, IndiGo stated that it operated direct flights between India and China even before the pandemic. Therefore, it already has the necessary systems and procedures in place to resume these flights.
The airline stated, “Our past experience and familiarity with local partners will enable IndiGo to resume these flights quickly.” According to the airline, the flight will depart from Delhi at 9:45 pm and arrive in Guangzhou at 4:40 am. On its return journey, it will depart from Guangzhou at 5:50 am and arrive in Delhi at 10:10 am. The company has also announced the launch of flights between Delhi and Hanoi, Vietnam from December 20.
Border Dispute
It is noteworthy that no direct flights have been operating between China and India since 2020, even though China is India’s largest bilateral trading partner. A military standoff has been ongoing between the two countries for five years, following a border clash in 2020. Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited China for the first time in seven years. He participated in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) regional security meeting.
During this visit, Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks. The two leaders acknowledged that India and China are development partners, not rivals. They also discussed ways to strengthen trade ties amid global tariff uncertainty. Prime Minister Modi expressed his commitment to improving India’s relations with China. He also expressed concern over India’s growing trade deficit with China, which has reached approximately $99.2 billion.
