Bengaluru: Five booked for allegedly derogatory social media posts against CJI BR Gavai

The Cyber Crime Police in Bengaluru have registered a case against five social media handles for allegedly derogatory posts against Chief Justice BR Gavai after last week’s attempted attack on him in the Supreme Court, the Deccan Herald reported.
The persons accused in the matter have been identified as Kesari Nandan, Sridharkumar, Nagendra Prasad, Ramesh Naik and Manjunath MC.
They have been booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita pertaining to intentional insult to provoke breach of peace and other relevant provisions, the Deccan Herald reported.
A suo motu case was filed after an officer from the social media monitoring cell came across the comments on Facebook.
On October 6, Delhi lawyer Rakesh Kishore allegedly tried to throw a shoe at Gavai and accused him of having insulted Hinduism. Kishore said he was angered by the chief justice’s remarks on the restoration of a beheaded idol of Hindu deity Vishnu, and on the Supreme Court judgement holding punitive demolitions as unconstitutional.
Two days after the attempted attack, a zero FIR was registered against Kishore at Bengaluru’s Vidhana Soudha police station based on a complaint by a lawyer, who sought action to “protect the image of the judiciary”.
