New Delhi: India head coach Gautam Gambhir has condemned the harsh trolling that youngster Harshit Rana has been facing recently. The left-arm pacer has been regularly included in various squads. Without naming anyone, Gambhir criticized those using Rana as a target to gain views and followers on their personal YouTube channels.
“It’s shameful that someone wanting to run his YouTube channel is targeting a 23-year-old. If you want to target me, do it. I can handle it, but trolling a 23-year-old kid for YouTube views is shameful,” said Gambhir in the press conference after India clinched the series 2-0 against West Indies
“His (Rana’s) father is not a selector. He has played cricket on his own merit. Don’t target these young boys,” he added.
Kris Srikkanth expressed strong criticism on Harshit Rana’s selection
Former India opener and 1983 World Cup-winner Kris Srikkanth expressed strong criticism on his YouTube channel regarding Harshit Rana’s selection in India’s white-ball squads for the upcoming Australia tour.
“There is only one member, Harshit Rana…nobody knows why he is there in the team. Best is to be like Harshit Rana and be a constant ‘yes man’ to Gambhir to be selected (in the side),” Srikkanth had said recently.
Gambhir said people should be carefull with choice of the words
Gambhir further said that people should be careful with choice of the words they use when talking about a 23-year-old player.
“You can target people based on their performance – selectors and coaches do get targeted. However, taking aim at a 23-year-old and saying such things about him which then get amplified on social media, imagine the mindset! Tomorrow your kid may also end up playing, at least realise that he (Rana) is just 23. You can criticise me, I can handle that, but for a 23-year-old boy, it is not acceptable. You need to be careful about what you say just to gain traction on your YouTube,” Gambhir said.
