Security lapse at Puri Jagannath Temple: Servitor caught taking photos inside Srimandir premises

In yet another breach of security protocols inside the holy Jagannath Temple in Puri, a servitor was caught while allegedly taking photographs of devotees inside the shrine using a mobile phone.
According to sources, the incident was reported by temple authorities, who flagged the servitor for flouting the ban on electronic devices within the temple premises. The servitor was then detained by police following the incident, but his identity has not yet been confirmed.
This episode comes shortly after a recent sub-committee decision reinforcing the ban on mobile phones for all individuals inside the temple, including security personnel and servitors, and using walkie-talkies instead.
The committee, following a security review, had emphasised strict compliance to protect both the sanctity of the shrine and the safety of millions of devotees who visit the temple annually.
Previous Breaches and Social Media Circulation
This is not the first instance of images from the temple interiors appearing online. Earlier this year, photos from the inner Kirtan Chakadaa courtyard were shared on social media, traced back to a youth named Gaurav Kumar Sahu.
High-resolution images circulated widely, prompting an investigation by local police. Similar incidents were reported in February 2024 when a digital content creator from West Bengal posted images of the temple interiors on Instagram, raising concerns about persistent lapses in enforcement.

Enhanced Security Measures
In addition to mobile phone restrictions, authorities have also focused on aerial security. Earlier this month, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) declared the temple a Red Zone, effectively a no-fly zone for drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles until September 2028.
The measure aims to prevent unauthorised drone flights that could compromise security. Anti-drone devices have been deployed to intercept and neutralise any rogue drones entering the restricted airspace, in view of recent attempts by content creators to photograph the shrine.
