Sensex, Nifty rise on Muhurat trading session: Demand for bank, IT stocks

Auspicious buying in finance and IT stocks drove the Indian stock market benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty up on the special Muhurat trading on Tuesday.
Sensex rose 62.97 points to close at 84,426.34 while the Nifty gained 25.45 points to settle at 25,868.60 in the Muhurat trading session, signalling a positive start to the new Samvat Year 2082.
Bajaj Finserv, Axis Bank, Infosys, Mahindra and Mahindra, Tata Motors, and Bajaj Finance were the top gainers in the 30-pack Sensex. However, Kotak Bank, ICICI Bank, HCL Tech, and Bharti Airtel became the major laggards.
On the Nifty, Cipla gained the most, up 1.49 per cent, followed by Bajaj Finserv, Axis Bank, and Infosys.
Muhurat trading is a one-hour, symbolic trading session conducted by Indian stock exchanges on Diwali. This year, the bourses celebrated the Diwali holiday on October 21 and held the special Muhurat trading session from 1.45 pm to 2.45 pm for Laxmi Pujan.
On Monday, the Sensex closed 411.18 points higher at 84,363.37 while the Nifty finished 133.30 points ahead to settle at 25,843.15.
