'Thamma' box office collection Day 1 early estimates: Set for a solid opening day

After Kollywood and Tollywood, it is now time for Bollywood as far as Diwali releases are concerned. With October 21 being the Diwali holiday in the northern and eastern parts of India, it was the chosen date for the two Bollywood releases - Thamma and Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat.

Thamma, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna, is the latest film from the horror-comedy universe bankrolled by Maddock Films. The film took a slow start in the morning shows with an average occupancy of 16 percent across India but the afternoon shows had a jump with the occupancy surging towards 30 percent in the country.

The full effect of the national holiday is on view with the evening shows experiencing a bigger jump with the occupancy touching 40-50 percent across circuits. As per early estimates, the film is certain to cross Rs 20 crore nett in India and has an outside chance of touching Rs 25 crore as well.

In states like Gujarat, the Diwali holidays will run through the week and it is generally a region where comedies work well. Thamma will need this circuit to do blockbuster business for it to have a long run. The opening day numbers could have been bigger, as a proper biggie has the potential to do Rs 50 crore even while clashing with a smaller film.

However, Thamma didn't have the usual pre-release buzz that you would associate with a Maddock Films horror-comedy, despite having a good cast and decent music. Nevertheless, the opening day of Rs 22-25 crore range isn't a bad start and if the word-of-mouth spreads, it could set it up for a strong week.
