Confusion over dates fails to dampen Diwali celebrations in Phagwara, surrounding towns

The festival of lights, Diwali, was celebrated across Phagwara and adjoining towns —Phillaur, Nakodar, Goraya, Banga, Kapurthala, Sultanpur Lodhi and Jalandhar — with devotion and enthusiasm, despite widespread confusion over the exact date of the observance. While some devotees celebrated the festival on Monday, October 20, others observed it on Tuesday, October 21. To avoid missing the auspicious occasion, many families preferred to celebrate on both days.

Homes, markets and streets across the region were illuminated with traditional diyas, candles and decorative lights, creating a mesmerising atmosphere of joy and togetherness. The festive fervour was evident everywhere as the people exchanged sweets, gifts and greetings while performing Lakshmi Puja, marking the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.

New Model Town resident Chander Mohan Sharma, Hargobind Nagar resident Vishwamitter Sharma and Central Town resident Pawan Kumar shared that due to confusion regarding the festival’s date, they performed Diwali Puja on both the days. “Rather than missing the auspicious time, we decided to celebrate on both the days with complete faith and devotion,” they said, reflecting the spirit of inclusivity and reverence that marked this year’s celebration.

Religious places, including temples and gurdwaras, witnessed heavy footfall over both days as devotees thronged to offer prayers and seek divine blessings for happiness, health and prosperity. A particularly large gathering was seen at local gurdwaras on Tuesday following the appeal of the Sikh high priests. Community kitchens (langars) and charitable activities were organised in several areas, highlighting the festival’s message of sharing, compassion and unity.

Despite official restrictions on bursting high-velocity firecrackers, the night sky in many areas of Phagwara and nearby towns lit up with colour as residents celebrated late into the night. Phagwara Additional Deputy Commissioner Dr Akshita Gupta had earlier appealed to the public to celebrate an eco-friendly and safe Diwali by refraining from polluting environment by bursting fireworks.

Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Toora said the police personnel remained on high alert throughout the festive period to ensure peace and order in the region.

Overall, the twin-day celebration reflected the community’s unwavering spirit and devotion. Even amid the confusion over dates, people came together in observance of faith and festivity, proving once again that Diwali’s message of light, unity and hope continues to shine brightly across the region.
