Trump hosts Diwali celebrations at White House, calls PM Modi ‘great person’, then reiterates Russian oil claim
US President Donald Trump celebrated Diwali with a special event at the White House, where he praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him “a great person” and saying that he loves “the people of India.” The celebration was attended by Indian Ambassador to the US Vinay Kwatra, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. Several leading Indian-American business figures were also present.
President Trump lit a diya in the Oval Office, describing it as “a symbol of faith in the victory of light over darkness.” He extended his warm wishes to the people of India on the occasion of Diwali.
“Diwali reminds us that knowledge triumphs over ignorance and good defeats evil,” Trump said. “As we light the diya, we remember stories of courage, hope, and freedom, and we are inspired to walk the path of wisdom, hard work, and gratitude.”
Trump claims he spoke with PM Modi on trade
Before the Diwali ceremony at the White House, US President Donald Trump told reporters that he had spoken with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, mainly about trade relations between India and the United States. “We talked about a lot of things, but mostly the world of trade,” Trump said during the interaction at the Oval Office.
He also mentioned that India would not be buying large amounts of Russian oil going forward and added that their discussion briefly included regional peace.
“Not long ago, we spoke about keeping peace with Pakistan. I think it’s a very good thing that India and Pakistan are not at war,” Trump said.
Praising PM Modi once again, Trump called him a “great person” and highlighted the strong ties between the two countries. “I love the people of India. We’re working on some great deals together. I spoke to Prime Minister Modi today, and we have a very good relationship,” he said.
