WATCH: Rohit Sharma had shared plan to win World Cup with Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues, former captain has said, ‘humein haar haar ke…’

Former India captain Rohit Sharma, winning of T20 World Cup 2024 title and ODI World Cup 2023 finalist, was one of the many dignitaries who attended the historic ICC Women ODI World Cup 2025 final which was won by Harmanpreet Kaur’s Team India at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday. A day after India women cricket team’s incredible win an old video of Rohit Sharma’s chat with Indian cricketers Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues went viral on social media.

The video is from a podcast call ‘Double Trouble with Smriti & Jemi’ and was shot back in 2020 as India men’s team were waiting for more than 9 years to win the World Cup. After MS Dhoni’s won the 2011 ODI World Cup, Indian men’s team finally broke the jinx with their win under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 last year.

Before that they had lost in semifinal stage in 2015 ODI World Cup, 2019 ODI World Cup, 2016 T20 World Cup, 2022 T20 World Cup and 2014 T20 World Cup final as well. Indian women’s team had also suffered heartbreaks in 2017 ODI World Cup final and 2020 T20 World Cup final.

Rohit Sharma’s advice to Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues was that they should lose early matches but qualify for the knockout but finally win big matches.

“Hum dono teams ke beech main ek thing common hai ki, ICC knockouts main, hum log semi-finals main aur aap log finals main haar rahe ho (The one commong thing between the men’s and women’s teams are that we lose in the semi-finals of ICC knockouts and you lose in the finals),” Rohit Sharma had said.

“I think it’s important to lose a league match and then win the ICC knockouts (laughs). In the last two World Cups, we’d win the knockout games but lose at either the semis or finals,” Mandhana replied

Rohit Sharma recalled the men’s 2017 Champios Trophy edition where they won all their matches in the league stage, but India suffered a dismal loss to Pakistan in the final. “Even in the 2019 ODI World Cup, we only lost one league game to England and then lost the semi-final,” Sharma had said. “You are right in a way. Hum ko na mar mar ke jaana hai finals tak.”

“We shouldn’t qualify in the first position,” Mandhana had said.

Ironically India women cricket team lost three matches in a row to South Africa, Australia and England in the league stages before finally beating New Zealand in the second-last match to qualify for the semifinal.
