JAMMU, Nov 3: Locals staged a demonstration at Doomi village in Akhnoor today, demanding justice to the family members of a daily wager associated with the Power Development Department, who died of electrocution while repairing a power line yesterday.
Sources said the deceased Shubham Manhas (25) had reportedly asked his department to ensure a power shutdown before he began repairing a broken wire to restore supply in the area.
However, power was allegedly restored from another end while he was working, leading to a severe electric shock, they said, adding that he was declared as dead on arrival at the Government Medical College Jammu.
According to them, police have initiated inquest proceedings under the relevant sections of the law at Police Station Kanachak to further investigate into the matter.
Meanwhile, angry over the alleged negligence of the PDD, hundreds of residents today gathered on the National Highway at Doomi around 8:30 AM and staged a protest against the erring PDD officials.
They demanded a Government job for one of the family members of the deceased, immediate financial compensation, and strict action against the officials responsible.
The protest was called off around 10: 30AM after senior officers from the PDD and police assured the protestors that adequate compensation would be paid to the family members of the deceased and a proper enquiry would be conducted into the circumstances leading to his death in order to punish the erring officials, if any.
Meanwhile, BJP candidate for the upcoming by-elections to the Nagorta Assembly Constituency, Devyani Rana, met the grieving family of Shubham Manhas and expressed profound sorrow over the tragic death and prayed for peace to the departed soul.
She urged the concerned authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to this unfortunate incident, to determine accountability and prevent recurrence. Rana also sought immediate and adequate compensation for the bereaved family, along with all possible institutional support to help them rebuild their lives in this hour of immense loss.
