Facebook, Instagram and YouTube are banned in this neighboring country of India, know the reason
Nepal has banned several social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and YouTube from September 4.
Nepal has banned several social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, effective September 4th. The government imposed the ban after these platforms were unable to register with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. The ministry had given companies seven days from August 28th to complete their registration, but by the deadline on Wednesday night, none of the platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, X, Reddit, and LinkedIn, had submitted applications. Now, users in Nepal are unable to access Facebook, WhatsApp, and other social media apps.
These Social Media Sites Not Affected
Despite the Nepal government’s ban on social media, some platforms remain operational. TikTok, Viber, Viktuk, Nimbuzz, and Popo Live were already listed as registered, while platforms like Telegram and Global Diary are still undergoing approval. Several platforms, including Meta’s Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Alphabet Inc.’s YouTube, microblogging site X, Reddit, and professional site LinkedIn, have been included in this ban.
Will be activated immediately upon completion of registration
The ministry had directed the Nepal Telecommunications Authority to shut down platforms that had not registered by Thursday. However, the government has stated that any platform that completes registration will be activated the same day.
Millions will be affected
Communication may become increasingly difficult after the government imposed such a ban on social media, especially for Nepalis living abroad who are now unable to communicate with their country through these mediums. Millions of Nepalis live abroad for studies or employment, so this ban will directly impact their communication with family and friends. Facebook also recently launched its monetization program in Nepal. This move will significantly impact creators who earn money through videos, reels, and stories.
