Sesko injury news: Will Manchester United sign Harry Kane when Bryan Mbuemo, Amad Diallo leave for AFCON?

Manchester United spent over £200 million on transfers in the summer but may spend more when the window reopens in January, manager Rúben Amorim hinted following the 2-2 Premier League draw against Tottenham in London.

The revelation comes after striker Benjamin Sesko, one of the summer arrivals, suffered a knee knock after being introduced as a substitute. While the manager did not say Sesko will be unavailable following the injury, he did confirm that the Slovenian being sidelined was a real scare. He will be checked by the United medical team before an official fitness update is released.

Also among the mix of things is the fact that Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo will be leaving soon to join their respective national teams for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which is scheduled to take place from December 21 this year and go on until January 18, 2026. Thus, if Sesko requires rest for a few weeks, Matheus Cunha will be left with Joshua Zirkzee and Chido Obi alone. While Obi, 17, is still far from being a regular, Zirkzee is said to be on his way out as well in January. However, if Seskohas suffered a blow, it could turn things around for the Dutchman.

Amorim’s not ruling out the arrival of further reinforcements should be seen in this light. "We have to check everything, we have to check what’s happened with Ben," the gaffer was quoted as saying after the Spurs game. "Of course, we are going to have a problem there (AFCON), but we already knew; you can prepare in summer, but then you have a lot of players who are not going to play because it’s one game a week, so the management of that situation is going to be hard, so let’s see when the window is open if we can improve the team and try to repair something that happened. Until then we have to take the chance. We’ll see," Manchester World quoted him as saying.

Why Harry Kane’s arrival is unlikely

England captain Harry Kane, who is in brilliant form for Bayern Munich, is said to be pushing for a Premier League return. Harry Kane joined Bayern Munich in 2023 after Robert Lewandowski decided to leave for Barcelona. His deal with the Bundesliga champions is valid until 2027. With the all-time Premier League top-scorer record well within his reach, there is a chance for the 32-year-old to make a comeback to England, and if United decides to bid for him, there is a fair chance of him saying yes.

However, it seems more probable than possible that Kane will agree on a move in January — abandoning a good chance of European and German glory for United. Also, there is a clause in his contract that, if activated, will open doors for an exit in the winter of 2026 for a sum no less than €65 million. Despite being in incredible form, the Bavarians may agree to his departure considering his age. Thus, it is safe for him to complete the season with the Bavarians and reassess rather than making any half-thought decisions.
