Public Holiday: Schools, colleges and offices will remain closed on November 23-24 due to public holiday.

Public Holiday: This year, the nation will be steeped in reverence and discipline on Guru Tegh Bahadur’s Martyrdom Day. With the official declaration of a holiday in many states on November 24, 2025, preparations are underway as if the entire nation wishes to collectively commemorate Guruji’s sacrifice on this day. Major decisions have been taken at the administrative level – and this will have a visible impact on the lives of the general public.

Schools Closed, Two Days of Holiday Guaranteed

In view of Martyrdom Day, orders have been issued to close schools in several states, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttarakhand. Since November 24 is a Monday, students will receive two days off, including Sunday. While offices are closed for two days on weekends, government employees will benefit from a three-day extended holiday. In many places, examinations and academic activities have been postponed to avoid inconvenience to students.

Banks also observe a holiday – Important advice for customers

According to the RBI’s 2025 holiday calendar, banking services will be closed at the branch level on November 24th in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh, and Jammu and Kashmir. Transaction services such as cash deposits, check clearances, and demand drafts will not be available, so customers are advised to complete their important work before November 22nd. However, ATMs, mobile apps, and net banking services will remain operational as usual.

Public Holiday in Government Offices

State governments and Union Territories have issued notifications suspending work in all departments—ministries, courts, corporations, and local bodies. Local administrations in some districts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand have also declared a holiday on this day. Essential services such as police, medical services, transportation, electricity, and water supply will remain operational without interruption.

Grand celebrations at Gurudwaras across the country

Preparations are in full swing for special kirtans, ardas, and langar seva at major Gurudwaras across the country on this significant day. Large numbers of devotees will arrive at Delhi’s Sis Ganj Sahib, the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Anandpur Sahib, and Patna Sahib to pay homage to Guruji. Remembering his sacrifice, people will reiterate the message of humanity, peace, and religious freedom.

Why is Martyrdom Day celebrated?

Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Guru of the Sikhs, sacrificed his life in 1675 to protest against the religious atrocities of Aurangzeb. His sacrifice is a unique symbol of religious freedom and the protection of human rights in Indian history. This is why his Martyrdom Day is still celebrated across the country as an inspiration.
