3 Dead as Landslides Hit J&K; Kashmir Highway Blocked After Heavy Rain
Srinagar: After intense rain caused landslides and flash floods in the Union Territory, three people have perished and the national route between Srinagar and Jammu, which is the Valley’s lifeline, has been closed. Images display cars buried in the rubble and trucks trapped.
Ramban is one of the regions most severely impacted by the disaster. Power outages have also been reported, and several trees have been uprooted, causing traffic jams.
Flash floods occurred on Thursday after an unexpected period of heavy rain and wind rocked the region.
According to Parshottam Gupta, the former Sarpanch of Udhampur’s Sateni Panchayat, the area has sustained significant damage. “I have inspected my Panchayat, and there were several trees uprooted. The traffic and electricity have been affected in the area. After 4-5 years, such strong winds have affected the area,” he told ANI.
According to the weather service, the storm and intense rain were brought on by an active western disturbance.
In Ramban’s Dharam Kund village, almost 40 houses were damaged, and police had to rescue over 100 stranded residents.
Along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, heavy rain has also caused mudslides and landslides at about a dozen locations between Nashri and Banihal, forcing traffic to be suspended, according to officials.
According to a spokesman for the traffic department, mudslides, landslides, and shooting stones caused traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway to stop. He stated that until the weather improved and the route was cleared, commuters had been told not to use the important roadway.
