WATCH: Yuzvendra Chahal bags 2nd hat-trick of his IPL career, send CSK on a spin
New Delhi: Yuzvendra Chahal etched his name deeper into the IPL history books during the 49th match of the 2025 season, delivering a stunning performance against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The leg-spinner picked up his second career hat-trick in the league, joining an elite club of Indian bowlers to have achieved the milestone more than once. Only Amit Mishra, with three hat-tricks, and Yuvraj Singh, also with two, share this rare distinction.
In a spellbinding 19th over that shifted the momentum dramatically, Chahal dismissed Deepak Hooda, Anshul Kamboj, and Noor Ahmad to complete his hat-trick. Remarkably, this came right after sending back MS Dhoni, who had begun the over by smashing a six. Chahal, undeterred, kept his composure and dismissed the CSK veteran for the fourth time in T20s, setting the stage for his historic feat.
Before Chahal’s magic unfolded, CSK looked set to breach the 200-run barrier, coasting at 184/5 with Sam Curran blazing away. Curran hammered a powerful 88 off 47 deliveries, but once he fell, the innings spiraled into chaos. CSK collapsed to 190 all out, losing five wickets in seven balls — a collapse orchestrated entirely by Chahal’s guile and precision. He ended with brilliant figures of 4/32 in three overs, delivering a game-changing over that sealed the momentum in Punjab’s favour.
With this achievement, Chahal became the first bowler to register a hat-trick against CSK in IPL history. The moment was even more special given that it unfolded at Chepauk, a ground where no bowler had taken a hat-trick since Lakshmipathy Balaji‘s historic effort in 2008.
This was not just a personal milestone. Chahal also became the first bowler in IPL to claim a hat-trick for two different franchises, having done it previously for Rajasthan Royals against KKR in 2022. He remains the only bowler in IPL history to take four wickets in an over on two separate occasions — a unique feat in the high-stakes world of T20 cricket.
Finally, Chahal’s name now joins Yuvraj Singh, Amit Mishra, and Sam Curran as the fourth PBKS bowler to take an IPL hat-trick, further cementing his status as one of the league’s greatest-ever leg-spinners.
