78 suspected fever cases reported in Yamunanagar village, water found unfit
A health scare has gripped Tejli village under the Municipal Corporation of Yamunanagar-Jagadhri, with 78 cases of suspected fever reported over the past two days. Health officials suspect the outbreak is linked to contaminated drinking water and poor sanitation conditions in the area.
Two patients have been admitted to a private hospital in Yamunanagar for treatment, while others are being monitored at home. Many affected individuals have complained of high fever, headache, and stomach pain persisting for nearly a week.
The Yamunanagar Health Department deployed a Rapid Response Team to the village on April 29. Over two days, the team surveyed 380 households and identified 26 men and 52 women showing symptoms of the fever.
“There is a panic-like situation in the village due to the sudden outbreak. People are suffering from typhoid-like illness. The government should take concrete steps to control it,” said a villager concerned.
Health teams collected 40 blood samples each for Hepatitis A, B, C, and E, for the Widal test, and for leptospirosis and scrub typhus. The samples have been sent for bacteriological testing.
Additionally, two leakages were discovered in the village’s water supply pipeline. Eleven water samples taken from different households yesterday were found unfit for consumption. Another 11 samples were collected today for further testing, confirmed Dr Vagish Gutain, District Surveillance Officer, and Dr Dinesh Sharma, District Epidemiologist.
“Members of medical and paramedical teams have visited all areas of the village, conducting door-to-door surveys. Symptomatic treatment has been provided to all affected persons. ORS packets and chlorine/halogen tablets were distributed,” Dr Gutain said.
Residents were advised to boil water before drinking and to maintain hygiene, particularly handwashing before meals. A first aid post has also been set up in the village to provide immediate medical assistance.
Assuring the public, Civil Surgeon Dr Poonam Chaudhary said, “The situation is under control and under surveillance.”
