Kerala: Thrissur Pooram 2025 Begins With Traditional Kodiyettam Ceremony

The much-anticipated Thrissur Pooram officially began on Wednesday with the ceremonial Kodiyettam, or flag hoisting, at key temples across the city. This traditional ritual marked the formal start of the iconic temple festival with major participation from the Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu Devaswoms.

At the Thiruvambady temple, the Kodiyettam was held between 11:00 and 11:30 AM, following a series of preparatory rituals conducted on Tuesday, as per a report on The Hindu. The symbolic hoisting of the flag signifies the launch of the multi-day celebrations that draw thousands of visitors from across the country and beyond.

The lead-up to the main event includes a series of significant cultural and religious programs. One of the highlights, the sample fireworks (Vedikettu), is scheduled for the evening of May 4 at 7 PM. The next day, May 5, will see the Pooram Expo and the traditional Vilambaram—the official public declaration of the festival, reported On Manorama.

A spectacular moment is expected on the same day as Ernakulam Sivakumar, the temple elephant, is set to ceremoniously enter through the southern gopuram heralding the formal commencement of the Pooram.

May 6 will feature the festival’s most awaited events—the kudamattam, or the exchange of vividly decorated umbrellas between the two temples, and the competitive fireworks displays, both of which have long captivated festival-goers with their grandeur and artistry.

The grand final event will take place on May 7, starting with the Pakalppooram at 8 AM and culminating in the Upachaaram Chollipiriyal ritual at noon. The main fireworks show, a major draw for tourists and locals alike, is slated for 3 PM that day, promising a dazzling spectacle above Thekkinkadu Maidanam, as per reports.

To manage the expected surge in crowd movement, Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will be deploying additional buses throughout the festival period, aiming to facilitate easy and efficient travel for attendees.
