In 1984, Mumbai’s Juhu, where Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, and Hrithik Roshan reside was a developing area. Raghunandan Srinivas Kamath founded the first Naturals Ice Cream outlet in a 200 sq. ft. shop. He wanted to give ice creams made of pure, fresh fruits, and made with simple ingredients like milk and sugar.

Kamath’s father was a fruit vendor. He left school at the age of 14 and started assisting his brother in the eatery business. During this time his urge to start something of his own grew.

He parted ways with his brother and invested Rs 3.5 lakh in Naturals Ice Cream business. His first menu had 12 unique flavors like sitaphal, tender coconut, jackfruit, muskmelon, and kala jamun.

Celebrity Connection

Kamath wanted to open his first outlet in Juhu as planned by him. It was due to the glamour of Bollywood stars due to which it was crowded and different customers used to come there. “Celebrities including Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, and Hema Malini stayed in the area. I thought they’d draw more crowds,” Kamath once told The Telegraph.

He believed the power of word-of-mouth will help his brand to grow. The unique flavors and quality of Naturals Ice Cream slowly became the household name. They also expanded the menu to more than 20 flavors like gajar halwa, tilgul, cucumber, and prasadam.

Natural Ice Cream In World

A single shop later grew into a Rs 300+ crore business with over 165 outlets in 15 states in India. Natural coconut flavor became famous worldwide. The brand’ introduced vending machines for 24/7 ice cream access and changed itself as per current world.

Raghunandan Kamath passed away in 2024 at the age of 75 but his legacy is still alive in the form of his product ‘Natural Ice cream’.
