Congress veteran Girija Vyas passes away at 78
Congress veteran and former union minister Girija Vyas passed away on Thursday at a private hospital in Ahmedabad where she was admitted following severe burns at a family event in Udaipur on April 2.
Vyas was shifted from Udaipur to Ahmedabad after sustaining 90% burns in a tragedy during Gangaur puja at her Udaipur house.
She was 78.
Expressing anguish at the demise, former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot said, “The demise of former Union minister and former Congress state president Girija Vyas is an irreparable loss for all of us. Vyas had made a great contribution in the field of education, politics and social service. Her untimely demise in such an accident is a big shock for us."
Vyas began her political career as Udaipur district Congress chief in 1977. From 1985 to 1990 she was an MLA and a minister in Rajasthan. In 1991 she was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time and became a junior information and broadcasting minister in the PV Narasimha Rao government.
In 1993 she was elevated as Mahila Congress chief and from 2005 to 2011 chaired the National Commission for Women.
She was the Union Urban Affairs Minister in the Manmohan Singh government from 2013 to 2014.
Vyas also served as editor, ‘Sadesh’, a Congress journal, for long.
