International Labour Day observed across J&K

JAMMU, May 1: The International Labour Day was observed today with solemnity and resolve by various political and social organizations as well as educational institutions across Jammu and Kashmir.
On Labour Day, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Sports, Satish Sharma, extended heartfelt greetings to the workers across the nation, acknowledging their vital contributions to India’s growth and progress. Speaking at a Labour Day function in Jammu, the Minister stated, “Labour Day is a reminder that the strength of our nation lies in the dedication, perseverance, and hard work of its people. Our workers, across all sectors, are the backbone of our economy and the drivers of our progress.”
The Minister reaffirmed the Government’s unwavering commitment towards ensuring fair wages, safe and dignified working conditions and greater access to social security for all the workers. He also highlighted various initiatives undertaken by the Government to promote skill development, generate employment opportunities and introduce labour reforms aimed at empowering the youth and protecting the rights of workers.
Labour Department Jammu organized a ‘Run for Health and Safety of Workers’ to mark the occasion. The Run was flagged off at 6 AM by Labour Commissioner J&K, Charandeep Singh from Shram Bhawan, Railway Road, Jammu. The run followed a designated route via War Memorial, Railway Station, J&K Bank Zonal Office link lane, Divisional Commissioner Office Jammu, and culminated at the Office of Labour Commissioner J&K. The event aimed to promote awareness about the importance of health, safety and dignity of workers across sectors. Deputy Labour Commissioner Jammu Veenkashi Koul; Chief Accounts Officer, JKESIS Nimisha Anand; Assistant Labour Commissioner, Central Roopali Gandotra and Assistant Labour Commissioner Rupali Jasrotia, among other officers participated in the Run.
In connection with May Day, National Conference (NC) organized a function at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhawan, Jammu, reaffirming the party’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of the working class. The occasion was graced by prominent party leaders including cabinet minister Satish Sharma, Nasir Aslam Wani (Advisor to Chief Minister), additional general secretary Ajay Sadhotra and provincial president Rattan Lal Gupta. On the occasion, Nar Singh, president NC Labour Cell, presented a memorandum to the Minister and Advisor to the CM, detailing the pressing concerns of the labour class.
Apni Party president Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari, today on May Day, paid tributes to the labour class of society emphasizing that “this day serves as a reminder of their invaluable contribution to the nation’s infrastructural development and progress.” He said Apni Party stands for a future where every worker in our society is valued, respected, empowered, and rightfully rewarded.
Provincial president of the Apni Party, Manjit Singh, presided over a meeting at the party office in Jammu to pay glowing tributes to the nation’s workforce. He called on the Government to implement measures that ensure better working conditions, job security, health insurance, and more, to improve the lives and livelihoods of the working class in J&K.
At the Central Library, Chatha of SKUAST- Jammu, May Day was observed with compassion, as unskilled and skilled workers from Central Library, Chatha and Faculty Library, R S Pura came together to organize a series of events aimed at raising awareness and sensitizing their peers about the significance of International Labour Day, under the supervision of Prof R K Samnotra, University Librarian.
Dogra Group of Colleges observed International Labour Day while acknowledging the invaluable contributions of its dedicated support staff. The event, held on campus, was an occasion to honor the hard work of the security staff, helpers, housekeepers and drivers of the institutions. Dr Samar Dev Singh Charak, Secretary of the Dogra Educational Trust, was the chief guest for the event.
J&K Offset Printers Association (JKOPA) Jammu, observed Labour Day in a programme held at Sunrise Educational Trust, Channi Himmat, Jammu. Among those present were JKOPA president Pankaj Sethi; immediate past president Sudesh Gupta, and other office bearers. Speaking on the occasion, Pankaj Sethi said that JKOPA has partnered with Sunrise Educational Trust to support the educational needs of underprivileged children in the region.
The Day was observed by Northern Zone Insurance Employees’ Association Srinagar Division, representing LIC employees of J&K in the leadership of Pawan Gupta, divisional secretary of the Association. On the occasion, Association members pledged to fight unitedly for recruitment in class 3 & 4 cadre in LIC, Old Pension Scheme, against hundred percent FDI in Insurance sector and other issues.
SP South Ajay Sharma observed International Labour Day with the labourers at Narwal, reaffirming the commitment of Jammu Police to community engagement and inclusive policing. The event was headed by SP South and joined by SDPO East, SHO Police Station Bahu Fort and SHO Police Station Channi Himmat. The team interacted closely with the labourers, listened to their grievances, and acknowledged their invaluable role in building the local economy.
Government Degree College (GDC) Reasi marked Labour Day through an insightful event organized by the Department of Sociology in collaboration with the Departments of Economics, Environmental Science, Hindi, Psychology and Urdu, under the patronage of Principal, Dr Udhay Bhanu. A series of addresses were delivered by faculty members, shedding light on the significance of Labour Day.
Kandhari Beverages, Samba, in collaboration with the Office of the Assistant Labour Commissioner, Samba organized a programme to honour the invaluable contributions of workers to the economic growth and development of the district. The event was graced by DC Samba Rajesh Sharma and ADDC Champa Thakur, who personally honoured employees for their dedication and service.
Association of Industries (AOI) Gangyal in collaboration with Labour Department observed International Labour Day by organizing a function in which a large number of workers and factory owners participated. On this occasion, officials from Labour Department talked about new schemes and informed the workers about their rights. Labour Commissioner, Charandeep Singh was chief guest on the occasion.
Presentation Convent Sr Sec School, Gandhi Nagar observed International Labour Day and the event highlighted services of the School’s dedicated support staff whose tireless efforts are essential for the smooth functioning of the institute. Principal Sr Amelina Rodrigues, addressed the gathering with an inspiring speech, acknowledging and thanking the support staff for their relentless services.
The International Delhi Public School (IDPS) observed International Labour Day with a vibrant program to honour the invaluable contributions of workers across all walks of life. The event was graced by Satpal Sharma; Managing Director, Dr Dheeraj Jamwal Sharma and others. The event was aimed to instill respect and appreciation among students for the dignity of labour.
Rotary Club Jammu Baahu, under District 3070, observed International Labour Day in collaboration with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited’s Plant at Rail Head, Jammu. Renowned social reformer Dr Navneet Kaur led an interactive session educating HPCL workers about labour rights and legal protections. Ashish Samalia, Chief Manager, HPCL Jammu Depot highlighted organization’s dedication to labour welfare.
International Labour Day was observed by management committee of Rehan Basera Boria Basti, Gorkha Nagar, Bahu Fort, Jammu by organizing a programme in which I D Soni (Incharge, Old Age Home, Ambphala) was chief guest. On the occasion, Sham Lal Basson (ex- councilor), Subash Gupta (retired judge) and other dignitaries spoke on the historical facts of May Day.
Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU) and other trade union leaders observed May Day and the workers were addressed by Jagdish Sharma, general secretary; Mujafer Wani, vice president; Jia Lal Parihar and Ramesh Chand, secretary of State Committee of CITU and other trade leaders. Speaking on the occasion, the speakers claimed that in India, the Government is aggressively pushing forward the implementation of Labour Codes, which is a direct assault on the rights of workers.
JKCCTU observed May Day as International Labour Day at Bemina Srinagar and in Jammu also by organizing functions which were attended by a large number of activists and leaders. Mohd Maqbool, State president at Srinagar and Gurmeet Singh at Jammu paid homage to the Chicago martyrs and expressed solidarity with the struggling workers who are fighting for social justice.
Jal Shakti PHE Employees and Worker Association staged a protest on May Day at PHE Station Barrian in which a large number of employees and workers participated under the leadership of Som Nath, senior Trade Union leader of Jammu province. The employees raised slogans in favour of their demands including regularization of daily wagers, release of their pending wages, etc.
GDC Ramnagar in collaboration with NCORD Cell and Government Middle School, Thaplal observed Labour Day with great enthusiasm and community participation. The event was held under the patronage of Prof (Dr) Bhavnaish Chand Anthal, Principal of the College. The programme commenced with a rally to create awareness about the contribution of the working class to society.
Unique International Public School observed the Day with a special morning assembly where students delivered speeches, poems and skits highlighting the importance of dignity of labour and the contribution of workers in our daily lives. School Incharge, Randeep Kour addressed the gathering, emphasizing the value of hard work, humility and gratitude towards those who serve selflessly every day.
Low Paid Employee Federation, Anantnag under the leadership of district president Abdul Rashid Bhat paid homage to the labours of Chicago to commemorate International Labour Day. The leaders appealed the working class to stand united for their betterment. Moreover, employees’ demands were also raised on the occasion.
Pensioners and Senior Citizens Welfare Society led by its chief patron and trade union leader, Mir Ghulam Rasool, held a function at Ganderbal in which rich tributes were paid to martyrs of May Day.
