Workers unite at Seri Manch on May Day
In a strong show of unity and resistance, members of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), Himachal Pradesh Medical Representatives Association (HPMRA), and the Rehdi-Fahdi Union gathered at Seri Manch today to mark International Labour Day. The event drew participants from diverse sectors of the working class, united in protest against the central government’s alleged anti-labour policies.
The day, observed worldwide on May 1, was commemorated here as a day of struggle and remembrance. Speakers strongly criticised the government’s push for the four new labour codes, claiming they threaten to strip workers of their rights and pave the way for exploitative practices.
Among the most contentious issues raised was the proposed extension of daily work hours from 8 to 12 — a move condemned as a reversal of hard-fought labour protections. Union leaders also denounced attempts to weaken workers’ right to unionise, calling them a direct attack on democratic values and constitutional freedoms.
“This government is systematically dismantling labour rights under the guise of reform. These new codes threaten to make workers slaves in the hands of corporate cronies,” said Bhupender Singh, CITU District President.
Tributes were paid to the martyrs of the historic Chicago labour movement, whose sacrifices secured the eight-hour workday. Leaders urged today’s workers to draw inspiration from them and intensify their collective efforts.
In a significant announcement, the unions declared a nationwide strike on May 20 against the government’s labour policies. The strike, supported by a broad coalition of trade unions, will include workers from Hydel projects, road construction, Anganwadi services, Mid-Day Meal schemes, medical sales, ASHA teams, and the unorganised sector. The event concluded with a renewed call for worker solidarity and a collective pledge to defend labour rights across India.
