PM Modi Sets South Agenda: Launch Of Vizhinjam Port & Amaravati Capital Works Revival Today
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a key visit to Kerala and Andhra Pradesh today (May 2, Friday), where he is unveiling a slew of transformative infrastructure initiatives aimed at bolstering India's economic growth and connectivity. PM Modi is mainly set to inaugrate Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport near Thiruvananthapuram and relaunch Amaravati capital project works.
PM To Inaugurate Vizhinjam Int'l Port In Kerala
The Prime Minister began his day in Kerala, arriving at around 10:30 AM to inaugurate the Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport near Thiruvananthapuram. This ambitious Rs 8,900 crore project is India's first fully dedicated transshipment port, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s maritime ambitions under the Viksit Bharat mission.
Positioned close to major global shipping lanes and offering a natural depth of nearly 20 meters, Vizhinjam Port is expected to revolutionize cargo movement by reducing dependence on foreign ports and enhancing logistics efficiency. Officials highlight its strategic role in elevating India’s standing in international trade.
PM To Relaunch Amaravati Capital Works
Later in the day, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to reach Amaravati by 3:30 PM, where he will launch a comprehensive package of development works exceeding Rs 58,000 crore. The projects span a wide array of sectors, including transport, urban infrastructure, and defense.
The Prime Minister will also kick off the construction of key government institutions in Amaravati — the Legislative Assembly, High Court, and Secretariat — along with residential housing for over 5,200 families, collectively worth Rs 11,240 crore.
Further developments include extensive urban infrastructure under the Land Pooling Scheme, with 1,281 kilometers of new roads featuring medians, cycle paths, and integrated utility corridors, valued at Rs 20,400 crore. A flood control and transport network project worth Rs 17,400 crore is also being launched to improve resilience and connectivity across the capital region.
In a move to bolster defense capabilities, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for a new Missile Test Range in Nagayalanka, an investment of Rs 1,460 crore.
He will inaugurate seven National Highway projects and lay foundation stones for six additional highway corridors and a new Railway venture.
