Axiom Space’s Ax-4 mission is special for India, here's why

Axiom Space’s Ax-4 mission, launching no earlier than May 29, 2025, is a proud moment for India and a milestone in global space exploration. With Shubhanshu Shukla, India’s second astronaut since Rakesh Sharma’s 1984 flight, serving as the mission’s pilot, Ax-4 marks India’s grand return to human spaceflight after four decades. Joined by commander Peggy Whitson from the USA and mission specialists from Poland and Hungary, Shukla represents India’s growing space ambitions.
Axiom Space, established in 2016 by Michael T. Suffredini and Kam Ghaffarian, is a major provider of human spaceflight services and a builder of human-rated space infrastructure. Located in Houston, Texas, the company plans to create the first-ever commercial space station, Axiom Station. Axiom Space conducts complete missions to the ISS while working on developing its replacement, the Axiom Station. Additionally, the company is designing next-generation spacesuits for use in low-Earth orbit (LEO) on the Moon and beyond.
“The Ax-4 mission is set to be a scientific powerhouse, conducting 60 studies with 31 countries involved. These experiments will explore human health, Earth observation, and life sciences, aiming to unlock discoveries that benefit life on Earth and beyond,” remarked space expert Girish Linganna.
For India, Shukla’s role as pilot highlights our technical prowess and strengthens ties with global space leaders like NASA and Axiom Space. His work will also support ISRO’s Gaganyaan mission, planned for 2025, showing that India is ready to compete on the world stage. This mission is a beacon of hope, sparking excitement among students and space enthusiasts across the country.
Axiom Space has built a strong foundation with its earlier missions, paving the way for Ax-4. The first, Ax-1, launched in April 2022, was a historic 17-day trip as the world’s first all-private mission to the International Space Station (ISS). Its crew from the USA, Israel, and Canada conducted over 25 experiments, proving private companies could handle complex space missions. Ax-2, in May 2023, was a 10-day mission that included Saudi Arabia’s first astronauts and completed over 20 microgravity studies, focusing on science and technology. Ax-3, launched in January 2024, lasted 21 days with an all-European crew from the USA, Italy, Türkiye, and Sweden, carrying out over 30 experiments on human physiology and tech advancements. These missions showed Axiom’s knack for uniting nations and pushing scientific boundaries.
National pride for every Indian
Following in Rakesh Sharma’s footsteps, Shubhanshu Shukla carries the dreams of a young, ambitious nation. His role will inspire countless students to pursue science and technology, reinforcing India’s place in the global space community. From classrooms in small towns to bustling cities, Shukla’s mission is expected to ignite curiosity and hope, showing that no dream is too big. It’s a reminder that India is not just part of the space race but is helping shape its future.
This mission is also a vital precursor for ISRO's ambitious human spaceflight program, Gaganyaan. The experience Shukla gains operating within the ISS environment, adapting to microgravity, conducting complex experiments, and working within international protocols will be invaluable. As one of the astronauts already designated for Gaganyaan, his first-hand knowledge will directly feed into India's preparations for launching its crew into orbit, demonstrating indigenous capability. Ax-4 provides a crucial stepping stone, allowing ISRO to refine procedures and build confidence before the maiden Gaganyaan flight.
