Exclusive: Tata.ev’s Next EV Leap with 64% Market Share – Vivek Srivatsa
New Delhi – Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. continues to lead India’s electric vehicle revolution, capturing a dominant 64% market share in FY24 with over 73,000 EVs sold. In FY25 so far, Tata.ev retains close to 60% share, cementing its position as the largest 4-wheeler EV manufacturer in the country. In this conversation, Mr. Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. highlights how the Nexon.ev kickstarted mass EV adoption. With over 2 lakh Tata EVs on the road, the company now gears up for the launch of the Harrier.ev in FY26. Tata.ev also plans to double India’s charging infrastructure to 400,000 points by 2027.
Question 1. What was TATA.ev’s volume and market share in the EV segment in FY24 and year-to-date FY25?
Answer. The largest 4-wheeler EV manufacturer in India, TATA.ev is the pioneer of India’s EV revolution and dominated the category in FY24, capturing a 64% market share with over 73,000 volumes. This strong performance has continued into FY25, where we currently hold close to 60% market share YTD.
Question 2.How has TATA.ev maintained its dominant market share since 2020?
Answer. TATA.ev introduced an EV to the mass market at a time when the technology was viewed as an expensive proposition. What essentially kickstarted the EV revolution in India – the Nexon.ev – single-handedly helped TATA.ev push the EV industry from a TIV of over 5,400 in FY 20 to 1.67 lakh as of FY 24. As the market leader, we have effectively built the EV ecosystem from scratch and set it up for everyone to reap the benefits. Right from building acceptance for the category amongst fence-sitters, to setting up the charging infrastructure, we have worked on the absolute basics to create and nurture the EV category for the benefit of the country’s future.
Our efforts across these years have helped us understand exactly what the modern Indian EV customer is looking for in their EV, our product portfolio – widest in the market – is spread across multiple price points, body styles, and battery options to cater to every customer archetype and their use case. Over 2 lakh Tata EVs on the road, logging over 5 bn KM place us in the perfect position to use their insights and create reliable EVs, focused on the Indian consumer. The success of our portfolio is testament to our effort in this space, and the excitement for products like the Harrier.ev and Sierra.ev only goes on to vindicate our position.
Question 3. What new EVs can we expect from the company in 2025?
Answer. As the leader of the India EV market, we’re committed to a portfolio of innovative and compelling EVs that resonate with the diverse use cases of discerning customers. We recently showcased the Harrier.ev at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, with its launch planned in FY26. The Harrier.ev is based on our advanced pure EV acti.ev+ architecture, whose every layer is enhanced with innovative technologies rarely seen in this segment. The soon to be launched EV SUV boasts a Quad Wheel Drive (QWD) Dual Motor setup, delivering an impressive 500 nm of torque for exhilarating performance across diverse terrains. We’re targeting a real-world range of around 500 km, addressing range anxiety and enabling customers to explore without limits. This will be followed by the increasingly awaited Sierra.ev, showed at the 2023 Auto Expo. Specific details on 2025 launches will be shared at the appropriate time.
Question 4. Apart from car launches, how will TATA.ev expand charging infrastructure?
Answer. TATA.ev is deeply committed to driving the growth of the EV market in India, with a crucial focus on overcoming the charging infrastructure challenge. With over 2 lakh Tata EVs on the road, we have collected data spanning over 5 bn KM of data – making it the largest data repository for a manufacturer, which helps us derive valuable insights and understand diverse customer use cases across India.
Moreover, we have been working closely with not only our customers but also key stakeholders such as Charge Point Operators (CPOs), Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), and other industry bodies. This approach allows us to go beyond the product and gain a comprehensive understanding of the challenges of the EV ecosystem. While the charging infrastructure continues to expand, we recognize that visibility, speed, and reliability remain critical concerns for potential EV users.
To address these challenges, we recently announced our effort to double India’s current charging infrastructure to over 400,000 charging points by 2027. A key driver of this ambition is the introduction of the TATA.ev MegaCharger Network. In collaboration with partners like Tata Power, Zeon, ChargeZone, and Statiq, we will be rolling out 500 co-branded chargers across the country to ensure enhanced accessibility for EV users, including a 25% discount on the charging tariff and priority access exclusively for TATA.ev customers. In addition to this, we will also be working with CPOs and OMCs to install over 30,000 chargers through our Open Collaboration framework.
Question 5. How do you plan to address after-sales support gaps?
Answer. After-sales is a continuous journey and we have been making significant improvements on this front. In terms of service, the pace at which our sales have increased is large and hence on the service side we are working on increasing our service capacity by augmenting bays, increasing productivity per bay, and more number of working hours/days. We have also introduced the TATA.ev exclusive service centers, with 6 of these outlets contributing to customer delight and more such touchpoints on their way. In addition to this, we are also working towards setting-up local warehouses to enhance ease of access for batteries to reduce the turnaround time when it comes to the rare times of the need for a battery replacement.
Question 6. Could you share details about TATA.ev’s upcoming EV lineup and its target buyers?
Answer. We’ve spoken about the fact that the Harrier.ev, shown at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in Delhi, is slated for launch in FY 2026. It’s built on our advanced pure EV acti.ev+ architecture, whose every layer is enhanced with innovative technologies rarely seen in this segment. The Harrier.ev will be launched in the market in the first half of FY 26 and will be competitively priced within the electric high-SUV segment, making it an attractive choice for a diverse customer base.
