Fact Check

Alt News found that Malayalam news outlet Mathrubhumi reported on the incident on Tuesday, April 29. According to the report, on Saturday, April 26, the accident victim, Badhariya, a native of Swagathamadu, Kottakkal town in Malappuram distrcit, was on her way back with her son Emir Mohammad from an anganwadi centre, when she was hit by a car in front of HMS Hospital in Kottakkal.

Mathrubhumi also attached a video to the report in which the car can be seen stopping immediately after the accident, and two people can be seen descending from the car and rushing to help. This indicates that the occupants of the car did not intend to flee after the incident. Another Mathrubhumi report on the incident also states that the driver of the car had apparently fallen asleep at the wheel.

Alt News reached out to Kottakkal Police, who informed us that the victim, Badhariya, was currently recovering from her injuries. We were told that the FIR had been filed as an accident report. Alt News accessed the FIR copy and found that the accused is a Muslim man named Mohammed Sanoop. The FIR additionally states that Badhariya was hit due to negligent driving and sustained bruising on her right leg, a cut on her upper lip and left cheek and an injury at the back of her head. The FIR was filed on April 29, three days after the accident.

As it stands, the incident of a burqa-clad woman being hit by a car in Kottakkal in Malappuram, Kerala, is being given a false communal angle and presented as a case of targeted attack against a Muslim woman. In reality, the car had immediately stopped after the incident, and the passengers descended to help her. Moreover, the accused in the FIR copy is a Muslim man.
