Apple Watch SOS Saves Man’s Life As He Accidentally Records Himself Having A Stroke (Video)
57-year-old Derick Gant from Toledo, Ohio has claimed that his Apple Watch turned out to be a life-saving device after he suffered a stroke while exercising. Derick inadvertently recorded himself suffering the stroke, and the footage has gone viral since. The video shows him jumping rope, which he described as part of his daily workout. He said that his goal was to jump longer than he ever had "without missing a beat," according to reports. He achieved his goal in just a minute and 15 seconds, but soon something dreadful happened.
He suffered a stroke and started to stumble and fall to the ground, as shown in the video. He reportedly felt numbness in his left leg or arm. At this moment, his Apple Watch was sending him alerts which read along the lines of, "It looks like you're in trouble, do you need some help?"
Initially dismissing the watch's warning notification, he soon realized something was seriously wrong and confirmed on his device that he needed assistance. The watch immediately contacted all his emergency contacts and dialed 911, leading to a rapid response from paramedics who arrived shortly afterward.
The stroke victim, identified as Gant, admitted he never expected to experience such a health crisis. He revealed that he had discontinued his prescribed blood thinners, which resulted in a clot traveling to his brain. Fortunately, due to his otherwise healthy lifestyle combined with the prompt emergency response triggered by his smartwatch, Gant achieved an impressive recovery of nearly 90 percent within just 24 hours of the incident.
Dr Mouhammad Jumaa, Gant's neurologist, emphasized that physical activity, proper diet, and blood pressure management are the most significant factors in extending lifespan and preventing such health emergencies. The doctor also highlighted how modern technology is playing an increasingly vital role in ensuring patients receive critical care more quickly.
The stroke occurred on July 23, 2024, and Gant has since made a complete recovery, as he confirmed in a recent interview with reporters. His story demonstrates how wearable technology can provide potentially life-saving intervention during medical emergencies.
