Wars have occurred between many countries around the world, so today we will learn when and between whom the world’s shortest war was fought. Looking back through the pages of history, there have been many wars that lasted for years. Their devastation has been terrible, and these wars are known for their strategy.
World War I and World War II lasted for nearly four to six years, but there is a record in the pages of history of a war that ended in just 38 minutes. Between which countries was it fought?
The war fought between Britain and Zanzibar (now part of Tanzania) took place on August 27, 1896. This war was due to a political dispute. During this time, the British army ended the war in just 38 minutes without any significant effort.
In 1893, the British appointed Syed Hamad bin Thuwaini to oversee Zanzibar. He was ruling peacefully. However, he passed away on August 25, 1896. After Hamad’s death, his nephew Khalid bin Barghash declared himself the Sultan of Zanzibar. At that time, Britain still had suzerainty over Zanzibar. So, Britain did not like that Barghash became the Sultan there. Britain ordered Khalid to be removed from the position of Sultan, as they wanted Hamad’s cousin Hamoud bin Mohammed to be placed as his successor.
Ignoring the orders, Burgash deployed around 3000 soldiers around his palace. When Britain learned about this, it asked Khalid to resign, but Khalid paid no attention. Britain also warned Khalid. Then on August 27, the British launched an attack on Zanzibar. When the war began, Khalid’s army surrendered in just 38 minutes. In this attack, 500 of Khalid’s men were injured.
