Governor inaugurates five projects in Burail jail

Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria on Friday inaugurated five projects, including a conference hall, a modern control room, a nursery, a Jeev Vatika and a gymnasium hall, at the Model Jail in Burail.

The Prison Department has set up a state-of-the-art conference hall in the jail for holding internal coordination and inter-departmental meetings, virtual conferences, physical as well as online training sessions.

From the modern control room, monitoring will be done round the clock through CCTV cameras for maintaining security, enhancing efficiency and supporting rehabilitation efforts.

A nursery (Manohar Vatika) has been set up in the jail where different varieties of medicinal plants have been planted and inmates are being trained to grow different variety of ornamental and fruits plants.

The department has also set up a Jeev Vatika where some birds have been kept for promoting rehabilitation and emotional healing of inmates. It turns the prison environment into a space of compassion, responsibility towards animals and ultimately responsibilities toward the society and human kind.

The existing gym has been upgraded by installing modern equipment for physical fitness of the inmates so that they may stay away from drugs and remain involved in positive activities.

Appreciated the rehabilitation programme undertaken by the jail authorities, the Administrator asked the authorities to put in more effort for providing the inmates with better environment inside the prison so as to make it the best jail in the country.

He suggested the authorities to install more CCTV cameras so as to cover every part of the jail. Kataria stressed upon planting fruit trees in the jail. He also stressed upon the setting up of a gaushala so that pure milk can be supplied to the inmates.

Kataria said, “I hope that the inmates will also cooperate with the Prison Administration and will take the benefit of such reformative activities.”
