Saini promises aid to Punjab in crisis, urges end to water politics
Amid escalating tensions over the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal and water-sharing issues, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini struck a conciliatory but firm tone on Friday, urging Punjab to rise above political posturing and uphold constitutional commitments.
Water shared natural resource
Water is for the people — not for politics. Let’s work together for a fair and sustainable solution. — Nayab Singh Saini, chief minister
Speaking after inaugurating a state-level Quality Assurance Conclave in Panchkula, Saini appealed for “statesmanship over petty disputes” and reaffirmed Haryana’s respect for Punjab. “Punjab is the land of the Gurus, and we hold it in the highest regard. Haryana itself was once part of Punjab. This kind of low-level political mudslinging serves no one,” he said.
In a notable outreach, Saini assured that if Punjab ever faces a drinking water crisis, Haryana would step forward to help. “We would install tubewells, draw from our groundwater, and ensure not a single person in Punjab goes without drinking water,” he pledged.
He underscored that Haryana’s demands are based on rightful entitlements already backed by the Supreme Court. “We are not asking for more, just for what has been agreed upon. The court has upheld our claim. This is our legal right,” he said.
Highlighting the risks of continued political deadlock, Saini warned, “If we keep fighting internally, water will go to Pakistan — the same Pakistan that has attacked and bled our people. Is that the outcome we want?”
Calling water a shared natural resource, Saini said, “Water is for the people — not for politics. Let’s work together for a fair and sustainable solution.”
SOPs for quality infrastructure unveiled
During the conclave, the Chief Minister also launched the Standard Operating Methods and Procedures (SOMPs) prepared by the Haryana Quality Assurance Authority — India’s first such state-level body.
Calling the SOPs “a vision, not just a document,” he said they lay the foundation for sustainable, safe, and efficient infrastructure. “Our goal is for every construction project and public service to meet international standards,” Saini said.
He announced the launch of the Authority’s website and the creation of a Research and Development Centre to tailor best practices to Indian needs. The SOPs will eventually extend to PPP and private sector projects as well.
“Quality is not just a task but a habit. This is how we build trust and a legacy,” Saini said.
