8 city roads declared ‘no tolerance zones’, violators to face heat
The Police Commissionerate, Ludhiana, today declared eight roads as ‘no-tolerance roads’, where any kind of traffic violation or encroachment by shopkeepers or roadside vendors will not be allowed at all. Ludhiana traffic police, along with the municipal corporation, will man these roads from morning till late evening to ensure traffic flow remained smooth and commuters enjoy a smooth ride without any traffic hindrance.
Commissioner of Police, Ludhiana, Swapan Sharma, along with DCP (Law and Order) Parminder Singh Bhandal, Additional DCP (Traffic) Gurpreet Purewal, ACPs (Traffic) Jatin Bansal and Gurpreet Singh and a large number of traffic cops and MC employees officially announced the initiative in the presence of public at Dandi Swami Chowk.
Talking to The Tribune, Sharma said that in the first phase eight roads had been declared no-tolerance roads. These are Field Ganj road from Jagraon bridge to Civil Hospital both way, Rahon Road, Jodhewal Chowk to Jagirpur Road cut, Bhamian Road from New Onkar Vihar cut to Bhamian Colony cut, Chandigarh Road from Government High School, Mundian cut, to 33-ft road vegetable market stretch, Chimney Road, Canal bridge, Pakhowal, to indoor stadium both sides, Atam Park to Libra cut, Dugri road, both way, and Dandi Swami Chowk to DMC Hospital cut.
These eight roads where managing traffic had been an issue for a long time were selected in the first phase and after its proper implementation, the next eight roads would be selected. Ambulances and school vehicles used to remain stuck on these roads for long periods and commuters in a hurry to reach their destination also faced chaos.
“From today onwards, the police will keep a watch on these roads for one month and senior traffic police officials will take a round of these roads daily. Traffic cops will also be stationed on these roads and even tow away vans will also take round to take away any wrongly parked vehicle,” held Commissioner of Police.
Sharma also said that on all these eight roads, yellow lines had been drawn and if vehicles were found parked outside the yellow lines, then legal action would be taken against the vehicle owners. If shopkeepers keep their goods on roadside or set up a makeshift vend outside the yellow line, then they will also face action.
DCP, Law and Order (who is also having additional charge of traffic), said today that the Commissioner himself conducted a meeting with shopkeepers and told them clearly that they should avoid encroachments. If shopkeepers will not comply with the order after serving them notice, then FIRs will be registered.
