Historians on secrets of the Taj Mahal
According to Oak, the monument was initially built by a Hindu king and was later taken over by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, who transformed it into a mausoleum. He also claimed that the sealed chambers house several Hindu idols, lending weight to the theory that the Taj Mahal was once a temple.
In contrast, historian Rana Safvi was quoted as saying in a report by BBC that “there is no question” of revisiting the history of the Taj Mahal, firmly stating that no evidence supports the idea of a temple having existed at the site.
“There was a haveli [mansion] owned by Hindu ruler Jai Singh, which existed before the Taj was built there,” she added.
