Nicaragua withdraws from UNESCO in protest at press freedom award

Nicaragua has left UNESCO. This happened because UNESCO gave a press freedom prize to La Prensa, a Nicaraguan newspaper. Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO's director general, expressed regret. She mentioned Nicaragua will miss out on cooperation benefits. The United States rejoined UNESCO in 2023 after a five-year absence. Earlier, the US had withdrawn citing anti-Israel bias.
