Modi govt conducts another ‘surgical strike’ on Pakistan, after suspending Indus Water Treaty, India stops…
India Pakistan war: After the Indus Water Treaty, India conducted a ‘water strike’ and now stopped the water flow from the Baglihar Dam.
India has stopped the flow of water through the Baglihar dam on the Chenab River and is planning to take similar measures regarding the Kishanganga dam built on the Jhelum River.
A source provided this information.
According to a source familiar with the matter, the Baglihar hydroelectric dam in Ramban, Jammu, and the Kishanganga hydroelectric dam in northern Kashmir give India the ability to regulate the timing of water release.
India has decided to suspend a decades-old treaty following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the death of 26 people, most of whom were tourists. The Indus Water Treaty, mediated by the World Bank, has regulated the usage of the Indus River and its tributaries between India and Pakistan since 1960.
The Baglihar Dam has been a subject of long-standing dispute between the two neighbours. Pakistan has already demanded World Bank’s mediation in this matter. Pakistan particularly objects to the Kishanganga Dam due to its impact on the Neelum, a tributary of the Jhelum.
Earlier, there has been increased activity in Delhi regarding actions against Pakistan. PM Modi met with Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh on Sunday, 04 May 2025. Prior to this, PM Modi also met with the Navy Chief. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval was also present at this meeting.
