NDMC’s mega cleanliness drive in city kicks off today

In a major civic initiative aimed at giving New Delhi a cleaner and greener look, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will launch a citywide mega cleanliness drive titled ‘Shramdan’ from May 5.

The campaign, following the appeal of Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, will see all NDMC employee, from every department, dedicating one hour each morning, from 8 to 9 am, to sanitation activities before beginning regular office duties.

Describing the campaign as a transformative movement, NDMC chairman Keshav Chandra said: “This is not just a campaign, it is a citywide transformation effort. The contribution of every employee and every citizen counts. With one hour a day from each of us, the change will be visible, impactful and lasting.”

Officials said this was the first time that the NDMC was undertaking a sanitation initiative involving participation from all its employees.

To ensure efficient execution and accountability, the New Delhi Municipal Council has designated 14 head of departments as nodal officers — one for each sanitation circle. These officers will be responsible for coordinating field activities, deploying staff and ensuring daily monitoring and compliance reporting.

The NDMC has arranged comprehensive logistics and supplies for the drive. These include 1,400 brooms, 600 kg of garbage bags, 5,000 gloves, 5,000 caps and ID badges, along with 200 banners and placards to raise awareness.

The drive will focus on the removal of garbage and debris, cleaning of parks, underpasses, government buildings

and drains, pruning of trees, repair of footpaths and repainting of walls, medians and other public structures.

The civic body has also adopted a zero-tolerance approach towards violations. During the drive, action will be taken against unauthorised

vendors, public littering, use of single-use plastic, non-segregated waste disposal and illegal

hoardings. CCTV surveillance and ground-level inspections will help enforce these measures, with fines and FIRs issued to violators.

In a bid to ensure widespread public involvement, the NDMC is encouraging residents, RWAs, MTAs, schoolchildren and community leaders to join the ‘Shramdan’ movement. Special awareness sessions, community engagement activities and programmes promoting waste segregation and civic responsibility will be held throughout the campaign.

With this initiative, the New Delhi Municipal Council aims to foster a collective sense of civic duty and inspire citizens to take active ownership in keeping the city clean and well-maintained.
