Polythene, garbage leave drains choked in Ambala
A huge quantity of polythene and garbage dumped in drains coupled with smaller drainage pipes at the outlet, have left the drains in the Ambala City blocked. During the rainy season, the Ambala City gets waterlogged. Ensuring smooth flow of water in the drains during the rainy season is going to be a mammoth task for the Municipal Corporation, Ambala.
The nominated member of the MC House, Sandeep Sachdeva, who is also the husband of Mayor Shailja Sachdeva, expressed disappointment with the condition of drains in the city. He said their condition has been ignored by the officials concerned in the past, resulting in waterlogging.
Sandeep Sachdeva, during the inspection of Ghel Drain in Ambala City, said “The condition of Ghel drain is worse than other drains. The drain is filled with 2 to 3 ft of garbage and the outlet pipe is very small. Ambala City witnesses a huge problem of drainage and waterlogging during rains and all efforts are being made to resolve the issue. We are looking for the exact reason behind the blockade of drains, of which the Ambala administration is not aware or has forgotten.”
Sandeep Sachdeva said drains were being cleaned but some were in poor condition. Not only the rains, but human errors were also behind waterlogging in the city. It appears that the officials concerned never visited the sites when the drains were being cleaned.
The BJP leader, who along with the team of Municipal Corporation got the Ghel drain cleaned near the city railway station on Saturday, said, “The drains have not been looked after by the officials in the past and the small pipes installed at the outlet have made the condition worse. People of Ambala suffer huge losses during the rainy season due to waterlogging and negligence on part of the official is the reason for the losses people suffer.”
“The condition of Ghel drain is so poor that it is evident that the corporation has forgotten to clean it. A huge quantity of polyethylene, sacks and other garbage are dumped in the drain due to which the flow of water is obstructed. With the help of machines and workers of the corporation, garbage has been removed from the drains. We also appeal to the people not to throw polythene in the drains as these get blocked,” the nominated member of the House said.
