‘Worse than animals’: How modern-day slavery under 'rahua system' haunts Madhya Pradesh villages

Authorities rescued 16 mentally challenged and destitute men from bonded labour in MP’s Guna district, exposing a brutal exploitation system called ‘Rahua’—a form of slavery disguised as “stay and eat.” Victims, trafficked from six states, endured years of abuse, forced labour, and confinement. Eleven arrests were made, and a wide trafficking network is under investigation.
