Experts Discuss IP and Technology Transfer Best Practices at World IP Day Celebrations in Pune

TechEx.in, the Technology Transfer Hub at Venture Center in Pune, in collaboration with the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and Ministry of Education (MoE) Innovation Cell (MIC) successfully celebrated World IP Day through an awareness session titled "Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer: Best Practices and Learnings" on April 24, 2025. Supported by the National Biopharma Mission, BIRAC, and Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC), the event served as a unique platform for researchers, innovation professionals, and faculty members to explore IP strategies and successful models of technology commercialization.

The session commenced with a warm welcome address from Umesh Rathod (AICTE-MIC), setting the stage for an engaging and informative afternoon. An insightful keynote address by Dr. Premnath (Venture Center) emphasized the importance of IP for startups, academia, and industry.

A high-impact panel discussion followed, featuring Anand Bhadalkar (STBI), Rajneesh Kumar (BITS), Umesh Rathod (MoE), and Nitin Tewari (CSIR-NCL). The panellists spoke on institutional IP policies, tech transfer frameworks, and commercialization strategies.

The final session featured success stories from entrepreneurs and faculty members who have had success in patent filings, licensing agreements, and tech commercialization case studies. Speakers included Harshesh Gokani (ForHealth), Vikram Gota (ACTREC), Snehal Joshi & Namrata Bhadbade (DES-BJCOP), Asmita Prabhune (Green Pyramid) and Kamlesh Prasad (CSMCRI).

Premnath V, PhD, Director, Venture Center, said, “By bringing together diverse stakeholders from academia, industry, and government, today’s event provided a platform to exchange knowledge, explore collaborative opportunities, and learn from real-world experiences of institutions and innovators actively working at the interface of research and commercialization. We are happy to celebrate World IP Day with all the stakeholders today.

Umesh Rathod , Indovation Manager - AICTE - MoE's Innovation Cell expressed his thoughts by saying “On this World IP Day, let us remind ourselves that ideas are not just meant to be taught, they're meant to be protected, nurtured, and transformed into assets. Intellectual Property is the currency of innovation, and its rightful ownership will be the foundation of Viksit Bharat 2047 & would define the rise of Bharat on Global Innovation Index."

The event concluded with a networking session that allowed participants to engage with peers across the IP and tech transfer ecosystem. With insights drawn from diverse sectors and institutions, the event offered a timely and practical perspective on strengthening institutional IP practices and advancing technology transfer efforts—particularly for academic and research organizations aiming to translate innovation into impact.
