4.2-magnitude earthquake hits Pakistan, Afghanistan

A 4.2-magnitude earthquake hit Pakistan at 4PM on Monday, according to a report from the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).

No casualties have been reported so far.

The coordinates of the earthquake's epicentre were said to be 36.60°N latitude and 72.89°E longitude, which, according to Google Maps, was located at in the vicinity of what it calls the Nichagh region of Pakistan, which is quite close to Jammu and Kashmir, as well as Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

The epicentre was also said to be at a shallow depth of 10km, which makes the surrounding regions more prone to aftershocks, which can be demonstrated by the fact that a similar earthquake had hit Afghanistan only a few hours ago.

Pakistan frequently experiences earthquakes of varying intensities, on account of it being one of the world's most seismically active regions. The country last experienced a similar quake of a magnitude of 4.4 on April 30, with a stronger 5.8-magnitude quake being recorded earlier that month.

Its deadliest earthquake occurred in 2005, resulting in the deaths of more than 74,000 people.
