The Skanda Purana states that without observing the Ekadashi and Dwadashi fasts, one cannot attain liberation through penance, pilgrimage, or any other meritorious deeds. According to the Padma Purana, even if a person observes the Ekadashi fast willingly or unwillingly, they are freed from all sins and attain the supreme abode, Vaikuntha.

The Katyayana Smriti mentions that all men and women from the age of eight to eighty must observe the Ekadashi fast without any discrimination. In the Mahabharata, Lord Krishna explained to Yudhishthira the names and significance of all 24 Ekadashis to help people be free from all sins and faults.

Importance Of Ekadashi Vrat

In Vedic culture, yogis and sages have long emphasized turning the actions of the senses away from materialism towards divinity. The Ekadashi vrat is one such practice. According to Hindu scriptures, the word Ekadashi is made up of two parts: Eka and Dasha. The true meaning of Ekadashi is to transform the ten senses and the mind from worldly desires to divine devotion. It means controlling our ten senses and one mind, preventing negative thoughts such as lust, anger, and greed from entering the mind.

Ekadashi is a penance performed solely to connect with and please God. According to Hindu beliefs, the Ekadashi day is especially dear to Lord Vishnu. It is believed that Lord Krishna himself explained the glory of this vrat to Yudhishthira. The effect of observing Ekadashi vrat is that the devotee attains moksha, all their work is successful, poverty is eradicated, there is no fear of untimely death, enemies are destroyed, and they continue to receive blessings of wealth, prosperity, fame, and the blessings of ancestors.

Lord Vishnu Appeared As Mohini

According to the mythological story, during the Samudra Manthan, when the Amrit Kalash emerged, a dispute arose between the asuras and the devas about who would take the pot. The gods sought Lord Vishnu’s help to resolve this issue.

To divert the attention of the demons, Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of a beautiful woman named Mohini. With this, the gods, with Lord Vishnu's help, were able to consume the nectar. Since this event took place on the Ekadashi of Vaishakh Shukla Paksha, this day is celebrated as Mohini Ekadashi.
