Drug awareness seminar held in Nawanshahr school

In a strong message against substance abuse, Chaman Singh, Director of the Red Cross Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for drug victims in Nawanshahr, addressed a seminar at Jai Sandhu Public Senior Secondary School in Langroya, urging students to stay away from drugs and lead healthier, purpose-driven lives.

“Drugs are not the solution to any problem. They destroy families, break homes and damage the very fabric of our society,” Singh said during the awareness session held on the school campus. The event was part of a broader effort to raise awareness among the youth, in line with the government’s “War against Drugs” campaign.

Singh emphasised that the initiative by the Punjab government and police administration deserves full support from all sections of society. “We consider it our social responsibility to actively contribute to this fight. A drug-free Punjab is the foundation of a healthy and prosperous future,” he stressed.

Engaging directly with the students, Singh encouraged them to live meaningful lives and resist the temptations of substance abuse. “Instead of spending money on drugs, students should invest in books and learning. A well-read individual builds strong moral values and contributes positively to society,” he added.

He also expressed concern over the rising number of crimes and social evils, attributing many of these issues to drug addiction. “The root cause of much of today’s crime is substance abuse. Those who fall into this trap often lose their way, affecting not just themselves but everyone around them,” Singh noted.

Chaman Singh also highlighted the need for compassion and community support for those struggling with addiction. “We must not abandon addicts. They need our help. With proper guidance, social support and rehabilitation, they can return to normal life. Cooperation with de-addiction centres and involvement of social workers is crucial,” he said. The seminar was presided over by School Manager Anita and Principal Daljit Singh Gill.
