Opposition misleading Muslims on Waqf Act, says Minister Yadav
Union Minister Bhupender Yadav on Monday accused the opposition of “spreading confusion and provoking the Muslim community” regarding the Waqf Board Amendment Act, 2025. Speaking at a press conference in Delhi with Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, Yadav defended the legislation as a “progressive” and “inclusive” initiative by the Centre to protect Waqf properties and enhance transparency.
“This is not the first time Waqf laws have been amended. The Congress too brought changes before 2013. What we have done is in line with constitutional values and in the interest of ordinary Muslims,” Yadav said.
Present at the press meet were Delhi BJP general secretary Vishnu Mittal, senior leader Atif Rasheed and Minority Morcha president Anis Abbasi.
The minister alleged that “misuse and encroachment of Waqf properties” were happening primarily due to poor upkeep and lack of oversight. “Why is Congress objecting to the digitalisation of Waqf records, when even during their rule, the need for it was acknowledged?” he questioned.
Referring to earlier surveys of Waqf properties conducted in 1923, 1954 and 1995, Yadav raised concerns over the “sudden 100 per cent rise” in listed properties after 2013. He said the new legislation would “bring clarity” and “streamline the management of Waqf assets,” while also providing states legislative autonomy under Section 26 to manage religious matters.
Yadav also criticised Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi for their silence and non-participation in the voting process.
