Telangana Woman Delivers Twins With Doctor's 'Video Call Instructions'; Loses Both Newborns
A 32-year-old woman, who had conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF) after seven years of marriage, was reportedly devastated when a series of events at a local hospital resulted in the death of her children. The woman, Batti Keerthi, reportedly developed intense labour pain in her fifth month and was reportedly performed delivery by a nurse with the doctor instructing through video call (due to her unavailability). Following this, the family has since accused the doctor and hospital of gross medical negligence.
'Doctor Was Not Present During Delivery'
According to reports, Keerthi became pregnant through IVF around five months ago and was under the supervision of Dr Anusha Reddy. Last month, Keerthi visited a private hospital in the Rangareddy district for a routine check-up and Dr Reddy identified that Keerthi's cervix appeared to be loosening and carried out a stitching procedure intended to strengthen the cervix, as per a report on Telangana Today. She advised Keerthi to take adequate rest, and discharged her with follow-up instructions.
However, the situation took a dire turn early Sunday morning, approximately one month after her last visit. Around 4 AM, Keerthi began experiencing intense labour pains and was urgently taken back to the private hospital. At that time, Dr. Reddy was reportedly not present on-site. Instead, she guided the attending nursing staff remotely through video and voice calls, instructing them to carry out certain medical procedures, which included the administration of pain relief injections.
Some reports suggest that upon administration of these injections, the previously applied cervical stitches ruptured, further complicating Keerthi's condition. Despite the staff’s attempts to manage the situation, it was not until around 10:30 AM that the twins were delivered and by then, Keerthi had lost a significant amount of blood. The babies also did not survive the birth. It was only after the procedures were completed that Dr. Reddy reportedly arrived at the hospital and informed the family of the loss.
Following this, authorities conducted a review and sealed the private medical facility pending further investigation. DM&HO Rao confirmed that Keerthi’s physical condition is currently stable, although the emotional toll remains profound, as per a report on NDTV.
