Hyundai Motor India Marks 29 Years of Operations

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) observed its 29th foundation day on May 6, 2025. The company began its operations in India on May 6, 1996, and has since become a key player in the country’s automotive industry. As HMIL enters its 30th year, it continues to focus on expanding production and aligning with broader trends in manufacturing and mobility.

HMIL’s operations began with the establishment of a manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. The facility became operational in September 1998 and was Hyundai’s first integrated car production plant outside South Korea. Over the years, this facility has increased its output to meet domestic and international demand.

The company has introduced several models in India over the past two decades, including hatchbacks, SUVs, and electric vehicles. HMIL is now working towards a goal of achieving an annual production capacity of one million units. To help meet this target, the company is preparing to begin operations at its new manufacturing plant in Talegaon, Maharashtra.

In addition to its domestic focus, HMIL has played a role as a regional export hub. Since it began exporting vehicles, HMIL has shipped over 3.7 million units to international markets. The company hit major export milestones over the years, including 0.5 million units in 2008, 1 million in 2010, and 3 million by 2020. Its vehicles have been exported to more than 150 countries.

As of 2024, HMIL accounted for approximately 18.5% of Hyundai Motor Company’s global sales. The Sriperumbudur facility is also part of the company’s effort to implement environmentally responsible and technologically advanced manufacturing systems.
